Tunnelling through mountain rock to extract minerals at Phu Bia.

Tunnel drilling at Phu Bia chosen as a safer alternative to blasting

Mining operations in Xaysomboun province, carried out by Phu Bia Mining, have introduced tunnel drilling in the mountain as a safer method of mineral extraction, avoiding the risks associated with large-scale open-pit blasting.
A staff member at the Phukham project site explained that blasting large amounts of rock can pose significant safety risks to both workers and nearby communities. In addition to safety hazards, it can affect the environment through dust, loud noise, and ground vibrations.
“Blasting can be dangerous if not strictly controlled, and it may affect overall safety,” the staff member told reporters recently.
In response, the company has chosen a controlled tunnel drilling method that is gradual and precise. This approach minimises impacts on surrounding areas while maintaining safety standards in accordance with technical regulations.
Project managers confirmed that every stage of the operation is conducted under strict technical supervision and environmental monitoring. This ensures that mineral extraction proceeds responsibly, balancing operational goals with social and environmental concerns.
Although tunnelling without explosives is slower, with excavation progressing at approximately 3-4 metres a day, it is far safer than blasting. Since the project began in mid-last year, nearly 300 metres of tunnels have been successfully dug, demonstrating the company’s commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
The move reflects Phu Bia Mining’s ongoing efforts to implement modern, sustainable mining practices that prioritise the well-being of workers, communities, and the environment.
By choosing tunnel drilling over large-scale blasting, the company aims to continue its mineral extraction operations while minimising disruption and maintaining a responsible mining footprint.
