Xayaboury’s Elephant Festival wows crowds with dazzling performances

Under the watchful eye of their mahouts, 50 elephants captivated crowds with stunning displays at the opening of the annual Elephant Festival in Xayaboury province on Saturday.
The festival celebrates the deep-rooted bond between Lao communities and elephants, showcasing the animals’ vital role in Lao culture and history.
This year’s festival opened with vibrant dances by members of eight ethnic groups, highlighted by a striking dance involving 1,800 participants. Energetic drumming, national and festival flag processions, and a spectacular elephant parade added to the excitement.
Vice President Bounthong Chitmany attended the opening ceremony with his wife. The Governor of Xayaboury province, Mr Phongsavanh Sitthavong, also attended the event alongside Party and state leaders, Lao and foreign guests, and local residents.
The elephants wowed spectators with their impressive skills, including flute playing, racing, dancing, basketball throwing, and painting. Some elephants hoisted the national flag, presented bouquets, and showcased their strong connection with their mahouts through intricate routines.
A grand procession saw the elephants stride majestically through the festival grounds, with some representing each of the province’s 11 districts. Later in the day, the elephants entertained visitors with basket-swinging, balloon-throwing, football matches, and elephant rides.
The elephants have been expertly trained by their mahouts over many years, learning to greet visitors, request treats, and express gratitude and, unlike their wild counterparts, they are gentle and safe for close interactions.
Elephant health care demonstrations and exhilarating races between large and small elephants kept festival-goers entertained throughout the day.
As elephant tourism gains popularity, visitors flock to see these giants of the forest perform circus acts and pose for photos, believing it brings good fortune.
Throughout the festival, visitors can enjoy elephant rides, explore local markets showcasing regional products, and watch cultural performances by students. Concerts and tours of the Phu Khean Elephant Conservation Centre offer deeper insights into elephant conservation efforts while helping to boost tourism in Xayaboury province.
