Intricately woven shawls and scarves on display at the Textile Treasures of Laos exhibition in Vientiane.

Lao Silk House weavings combine tradition with modernity

The timeless beauty of Lao silk came to life before my eyes during a recent visit to the Lao Silk House on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
Standing before ancient silk textiles that have been preserved for decades, I found myself captivated by the intricate patterns woven into traditional skirts (sinh), each shimmering like moonlight on water. Golden threads intertwined with delicate fabric, sparkling as if the stars themselves had been sewn into the cloth.
This stunning craftsmanship is just one of the many treasures on display at the Textile Treasures of Laos, or Lao silk house, which opened in October at the Hor Kham Residence, next to the Presidential Office.
Organised by the Lao Handicrafts Association, the exhibition brings together prized heirloom pieces loaned from families across the country, allowing the public to appreciate the deep cultural heritage and artistry behind Lao textiles.

The exhibition is thoughtfully arranged into two sections that tell the story of Lao textile arts through a blend of tradition and modernity.
The first section, known as the Heritage Hall, features over 100 traditional textiles that showcase the exceptional skill of Lao weavers.
From ceremonial sinh to household fabrics, these textiles display complex motifs that convey ancient beliefs and folklore. Some pieces date back more than a century, older than the French Protectorate, and have withstood the test of time far better than any colonial architecture.

Ornate old-style blouses are sometimes worn by women on special occasions, featuring designs that have remained unchanged over many generations. Some of the traditional costumes worn by Laos’ ethnic groups.

The adjacent gallery offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of Lao weaving. Here, contemporary artisans reinterpret traditional motifs, such as naga patterns, on minimalist wall hangings and fashion pieces. By merging ancient techniques with modern aesthetics, these creations demonstrate that Lao weaving traditions are not relics but living, evolving art forms.
Set within the elegant Hor Kham Residence, an architectural blend of French Indochinese influence and serene gardens, the exhibition space itself enhances the experience.
Natural light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of the silk.
A branch of Naked Espresso on-site offers visitors a chance to enjoy locally sourced coffee while reflecting on the artistry that surrounds them.
The Textile Treasures of Laos exhibition is more than just a display of beautiful craftsmanship; it is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Lao weaving and the creative spirit of modern artisans. It tells stories of families, communities, and the timeless skill passed from generation to generation.
As you move through the exhibition, it becomes clear that these ancient skills are not fading into history but are being adapted and revitalised to thrive in modern Laos.
By supporting local artisans and purchasing contemporary pieces, visitors can help sustain this proud cultural heritage.
After seeing these masterpieces, one can’t help but view factory-made sinh at the Morning Market with a new perspective, recognising that the essence of tradition lies not just in appearance but in the dedication and artistry behind each piece.
The exhibition is located at the Hor Kham Residence on the southeastern edge of the Presidential Office and is open daily from 9am to 5pm.
Photography is permitted without flash, allowing visitors to capture the beauty of these extraordinary textiles while ensuring their preservation for future generations.
