In a landmark year that also marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Lao PDR and the 105th birthday of President Kaysone Phomivhane, Nam Theun 2 is proudly commemorating its 15th anniversary of power generation in Laos.
Since it began commercial operations in 2010, the Nam Theun 2 power project has made a series of economic, social and environmental commitments in accordance with its agreement with the Lao government.
The company, a leading hydropower generator in Laos, has delivered on all these commitments and continues to reap benefits for the country.
Some of the successes of Nam Theun 2 include the upgraded quality of living standards of the villagers in the area around the hydropower project.  The company managed environmental challenges and created a 4,000 sq km national park in its catchment area.
“Nam Theun 2 is proud of the milestones and achievements it has delivered for the country over the past 15 years,” said the Chief Executive Officer of Nam Theun 2, Mr Marc-Antoine Rupp.
“We take the responsibility of taking care of our business and the people in the surrounding communities with great honour.”
The proven success of Nam Theun 2 will help the government of Laos demonstrate that the development of its hydroelectric potential can be sustainable, and tangibly contribute to the country’s development.

Although much of its obligations under the World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) safeguards have been met since 2018, the company is actively contributing to improving livelihoods within its territory under four pillars – educatio, health, irrigation and essential infrastructure.
“To date, Nam Theun 2 has contributed more than US$600 million to Laos in terms of tax, royalties and dividends, and it will keep contributing to reach two billion US dollars before the end of the concession agreement in 2035,” said Mr Rupp.

Moving forward, Nam Theun 2 will continue its commitment to remain a strong force in contributing to the development of Laos and supporting the government in its endeavours.
“Our commitment to being a close partner of the government of Laos remains a priority,” said Nam Theun 2’s CEO.
“We will continue to support the country in its poverty reduction initiatives, and in ensuring sustainable development that benefits the people of Laos.”

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Nam Theun 2 is working with the renowned local agency, BlueGrass Design Group, to develop a communication campaign with the objective of making this celebration a source of pride for all Lao people.
In 2025, Nam Theun 2 Power Company Limited celebrates the 15th anniversary of the official commencement of its commercial operations on April 30, 2010.
The Nam Theun 2 project is one of the largest hydropower projects in Laos. It is a joint venture between Electricite de France (EDF) at 40 percent, Electricity Generating Company of Thailand (EGCO) at 35 percent, and the government of Laos, represented by Lao Holding State Enterprise (LHSE) at 25 percent, and is operating the 1,080-MW hydropower facility in Khammuan province for 25 years (2010–2035).
Nam Theun 2 generates an average of 6,000 GWh of electricity each year, five percent for domestic use and 95 percent for export to Thailand. With  revenues from the sale of electricity and over the concession period, it is projected that Nam Theun 2 will generate about US$2 billion for the government of Laos, aimed at poverty reduction and sustainable community development programme across the country.
