Govt sets key priorities for April in cabinet meeting

The government has outlined several key priorities for April during a cabinet meeting, including the control of market prices, product efficiency, and public security during the Lao New Year in mid April.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, focused on economic stability, public safety, tourism promotion, and environmental protection as the country prepares for major events, including the Lao New Year.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to stabilising the economy by promoting food production, ensuring the steady supply of essential goods, and monitoring market prices.
Authorities were directed to prevent unwarranted price increases, particularly in consumables and services such as transportation and entrance fees to tourist attractions.
Efforts will continue to curb inflation and stabilise the national currency through strengthened collection of revenues and financial support for businesses.
In addition, the government called on cabinet members at the central and local authorities across the country to make peace and security a top priority, especially during the Lao New Year.
Security forces will be mobilised to maintain order, and responsibilities for monitoring and guarding public spaces have been clearly assigned. To prevent road accidents and congestion, authorities will strategically allocate traffic routes and enhance public awareness of traffic rules through multiple media campaigns.
With the goal of attracting more domestic and international tourists, the government directed all provinces to prepare key tourist sites and ensure high hospitality standards.
Officials were tasked with organising Lao New Year festivities in a way that aligns with national traditions and culture. Public relations efforts will be intensified to educate citizens on the significance of celebrating the festival respectfully and responsibly.
The cabinet stressed the importance of enforcing Order No 11/PM, which focuses on preventing forest encroachment and illegal logging.
Authorities will continue their efforts to monitor land use and crack down on harmful agricultural practices, such as slash and burn farming, which contributes to deforestation and air pollution.
These priorities highlight the government’s proactive approach to addressing economic challenges, ensuring public safety, fostering tourism, and protecting the environment.
As April begins, officials across the country are expected to effectively implement these measures, ensuring a smooth and prosperous month for all.
Critics said price management would be more effective if relevant authorities mobilised inspection teams to monitor markets and enforce various measures to crack down on opportunists during the annual Lao New Year celebrations.
