Mr Suviegthong Vongchampa and members of the Vangvieng district authority receive a briefing on development plans and logistics during a visit to Chongqing.

Vangvieng seeks closer ties with Chongqing to expand trade, tourism

Vangvieng District, a tourism hotspot in Laos’ Vientiane Province, is seeking to strengthen cooperation with China's Chongqing municipality in a bid to expand trade, investment, tourism and logistics links, leveraging the Laos-China Railway corridor.
To advance this objective, Chairman of the Vangvieng District Administration Committee, Mr Suviegthong Vongchampa, recently led a delegation to Jiangjin district in Chongqing, one of southwest China's key logistics and manufacturing hubs and an important gateway linking China with ASEAN markets.
The visit focused on deepening practical cooperation between the two localities in areas including sister-city relations, trade and investment promotion, tourism development, modern agriculture and cross-border logistics, according to a statement issued by the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chongqing.
A major highlight of the trip was a visit to the Xiaonanya Railway Logistics Centre, a core hub of the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor through which China-Laos Railway freight services operate.
Lao delegates were briefed on customs facilitation measures, logistics networks and distribution channels that could help Lao specialty products enter Chinese markets.
At the International Logistics Hub Exhibition Centre of the Chongqing Hub Port Industrial Park, Chinese officials introduced plans to strengthen connectivity under the proposed China-Laos-Thailand Economic Corridor and shared information on cross-border transport and cold-chain logistics development.
The delegation also visited Weima Agricultural Machinery Co., Ltd., where they learned about advanced agricultural equipment, production capabilities and export operations that could support agricultural modernisation efforts in Laos.
In Baoping Village, Xianfeng Town, the Lao delegation explored Jiangjin's successful rural revitalisation model centred on specialty industries, including the Sichuan pepper industry.
The visit provided insights into how local industries can drive economic development while improving rural livelihoods.
Lao officials praised Jiangjin's rapid economic development, strong industrial base and successful implementation of rural revitalisation policies. They also commended the district's growing connectivity with ASEAN countries through the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.
Both sides expressed a willingness to strengthen mutual exchanges and pursue tangible cooperation in logistics, trade, agriculture, cultural affairs and tourism promotion.
The engagement comes as Laos seeks to maximise the economic benefits of the Laos-China Railway, which has become a key transport artery linking the country with regional and international markets.
Jiangjin district serves as the main hub of Chongqing's New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor and has actively expanded cooperation with ASEAN countries, including Laos, by leveraging its strategic position connecting the China-Europe Railway Express and regional trade routes.
The growing partnership is expected to further strengthen Laos-China relations while creating new opportunities for economic cooperation between Vangvieng—home to a Laos-China Railway station— and one of China's most dynamic inland regions.
Located in southwest China, Chongqing has emerged as a major pillar of China's global trade network under the Belt and Road Initiative. The municipality connects to more than 560 ports in 127 countries and regions through an extensive network of rail, road and maritime routes.
Home to approximately 32 million people, Chongqing is also one of China's leading manufacturing centres and a key gateway linking Europe, western China and Southeast Asia.
Bolstered by the Laos-China Railway and broader regional rail connectivity, the Vangvieng delegation’s visit is expected to bolster trade growth, investment flows and tourism links, while contributing to the development of the China-Laos community with a shared future.
