Phu Bia Mining marks National Arbour Day and World Environment Day, supporting Laos’ forest and climate goals
Phu Bia Mining (PBM) has reinforced its commitment to environmental stewardship in a series of tree-planting and conservation activities marking the National Arbour Day (on June 1), and World Environment Day and National Environment Day (on June 5), contributing to Laos’ efforts to increase forest cover, strengthen climate resilience and achieve its net-zero emissions target.
The activities, held in communities surrounding the Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation and Ban Houayxai Gold-Silver Operation in Xaysomboun province during June 4-6, brought together PBM employees, local residents, students and contractors to plant trees, clean up waste, and promote environmental awareness.
The celebration coincided with the theme of the United Nations’ World Environment Day 2026, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”, and highlighted the growing importance of collective action to address environmental challenges and safeguard natural resources for future generations.
PBM employees, local communities, and students participated in the tree planting activities at the local schools, while separate events at the mine sites saw PBM and contractor employees participate in environmental campaigns, including rubbish collection, tree planting in rehabilitation areas, and a recycling innovation competition designed to encourage sustainable practices.
The activities reflected PBM’s long-standing commitment to responsible mining and environmental protection.
A representative from the company’s Environment Department reaffirmed the environmental values upheld by its parent companies, PanAust and Guangdong Rising Holding Group (GDRH), and stressed the importance of minimising environmental impacts through comprehensive management and monitoring programmes.
Since commencing operations at Phu Kham and Ban Houayxai, the company has implemented progressive land rehabilitation throughout the life of its mines. By the end of 2025, PBM had rehabilitated about 372 hectares of land across the two operations, helping restore ecosystems and improve environmental outcomes in mining areas.
Environmental management remains a core component of PBM’s operations in Laos, with efforts spanning exploration, development, production, and rehabilitation stages to minimise impacts on surrounding ecosystems.
The company’s tree-planting and rehabilitation programmes align closely with the Lao government’s environmental agenda, which aims to increase national forest cover to 70 percent by 2035 and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Expanding forest resources plays a critical role in enhancing carbon absorption, conserving biodiversity, protecting watersheds and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, more than 4.5 million seedlings were planted nationwide on National Arbour Day this year as part of a nationwide campaign to restore forests, strengthen climate resilience, conserve biodiversity and support sustainable socio-economic development.
The National Arbour Day, which coincides with the International Children’s Day, serves as an important platform for educating younger generations about the value of forests and environmental conservation. By involving students and local communities in this year’s activities, PBM helped promote environmental awareness and encourage greater public participation in protecting Laos’ natural heritage.
As Laos accelerates efforts to pursue green growth and sustainable development, partnerships between the government, communities and responsible private sector operators such as Phu Bia Mining are expected to play an increasingly important role in advancing national climate and environmental objectives.
