Laos, S. Korea partnering to raise silkworms

The National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI) in Laos and EK Farm and Farm from the Republic of Korea will jointly set up a silkworm raising project with the participation of local farmers, with the aim of creating an agritourism project.
An agreement on the project was signed by both parties in Vientiane on June 10, witnessed by officials from Laos and Korea.

Dr Chanthakhone Boualaphanh and Mr Song Pooreum exchange signed project agreements.

The Director General of NAFRI, Dr Chanthakhone Boualaphanh, and President of EK Farm and Farm, Mr Song Pooreum, co-chaired the ceremony.
During the event, Head of the Management and Planning Division at NAFRI, Mr Vongvilay Vongkhamsao, outlined the details of the agreement and project implementation.
On behalf of NAFRI, Dr Chanthakhone said the initiative was crucial to NAFRI’s work, particularly with regard to food security and rural development, and the project would be carried out in line with the timeframe spelled out in the agreement made between both parties.
On behalf of EK Farm and Farm, Mr Song Pooreum said the company fully supported the cooperation agreement and thanked NAFRI and the Lao government for providing the opportunity for such cooperation.
At the end of last year, NAFRI and EK Farm and Farm achieved success in a pilot project on the raising of silkworms in Laos.
The pilot project took place from July 2022 to 2023, to determine whether Korean silkworms could be reared in Laos and provide jobs and income for Lao farmers.
The silkworms grew well and were able to adapt to the soil conditions and climate in Laos.
The project was judged as successful in Vientiane province, and Korean silkworms will be kept as a new silkworm species at the Horticulture Research Centre in Vientiane.
The cocoons produced have been certified by Korea, with the standard and quality achieving 90 percent of the quality of cocoons produced in Korea.
In the future, NAFRI and EK Farm and Farm will use new technology to achieve higher standards, and will make changes to production methods, with the aim of adding more value and reducing the cost of production.
The two sides aim to ensure the project is sustainable and supports environmental conservation, while also promoting the cultivation of commercial crops and solving the problem of the storage of plant varieties for use by farmers.
