Agriculture ministry to replenish fish stocks in rivers, lakes

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is set to add 72 million fish fingerlings to rivers, lakes and wetlands across the country as part of this year’s National Fish Releasing and Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Day on July 13.
The addition of more fish aims to restore aquatic biodiversity and support sustainable management of the nation’s rich freshwater resources.
The nationwide campaign is being coordinated by the ministry’s Department of Livestock and Fisheries, with fish fingerlings supplied by 53 state-owned fish breeding stations, 163 private hatcheries, and 111 family-operated breeding units.
Director General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, Mr Bouahong Khamha, said the department is working with provincial livestock and fisheries authorities, Vientiane, and international partners to ensure the success of the annual conservation initiative.
A special ceremony will take in the That Luang Marsh Special Economic Zone in Vientiane, which covers an area of approximately 50 hectares, where an estimated 350,000 fish fingerlings will be released.
Laos is recognised for its rich freshwater ecosystems, with more than 500 native fish species inhabiting its rivers and wetlands.
Among them are several rare and threatened species, including the Mekong giant catfish, giant barb, and Jullien’s golden carp, highlighting the importance of continued conservation efforts.
Recognising fisheries as a vital national resource, the government has prioritised the conservation, development, and sustainable use of aquatic biodiversity.
Since 1997, July 13 has been observed each year as National Fish Releasing and Aquatic Wildlife Conservation Day to encourage public participation in safeguarding the country’s aquatic ecosystems.
Mr Bouahong called on government agencies, development partners, communities, and the public to actively participate in this year’s fish restocking activities and strengthen efforts to conserve aquatic wildlife.
He said replenishing fish stocks in natural water bodies will help ensure sustainable fisheries, increase food production, support commercial aquaculture, contribute to rural development, strengthen the national economy, and promote the sustainable use of Laos’ natural resources.
