Officials from Laos and Luxembourg attend the vaccine cold chain equipment handover ceremony.

Luxembourg backs Laos with 2.5 million Euros vaccine equipment

The Government of Luxembourg has donated vaccine cold chain equipment worth about 2.5 million Euros to Laos, significantly strengthening the country’s national immunisation programme by improving vaccine storage, transportation and distribution nationwide.
The equipment was officially handed over on July 7 at the National Centre for Maternal and Child Health in Vientiane as part of Luxembourg’s long-standing support for Laos’ health sector.
Provided through LuxDev’s Health and Nutrition Programme, the donation includes more than 3,000 pieces of equipment, comprising vaccine refrigerators, freezers, digital temperature monitoring devices and mobile transport units. These will be distributed to health facilities at central, provincial and district levels.
The equipment handover ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Vannasay Sattakoun; Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in Laos, Mr Thomas Lammar; Regional Representative of the LuxDev Asia Office, Mr Robert de Waha; Senior Sectoral Adviser of the Health and Nutrition Programme, Dr Silvia Morgoci; and other representatives from the Lao government and development partners.
The donation forms part of Luxembourg’s continued support to the health sector in Laos.
Earlier this year, Luxembourg contributed US$875,000 through UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to procure essential vaccines for children and adolescents, helping to address a critical vaccine supply gap.
Officials said the latest contribution complements that investment by strengthening the cold chain system needed to safely store and transport vaccines from central warehouses to health facilities and remote communities across the country.
Procured from Luxembourg-based B Medical Systems, the package also includes installation, training for health personnel and three years of preventive maintenance to ensure the equipment remains operational.
Mr Thomas Lammar observed that the health partnership between Laos and Luxembourg spans more than three decades with a focus on improving access to healthcare services, particularly in remote areas.
“The refrigerators from B Medical Systems have proven to be highly durable and are designed to meet the challenges faced in developing countries,” he said.
“As part of Luxembourg’s broader support to the Ministry of Health, they have been, and will continue to be, truly lifesaving.”
Dr Vannasay said immunisation plays a vital role in reducing preventable diseases and supporting Laos’ health-related Sustainable Development Goals.
He thanked the Government of Luxembourg and its partners for their continued assistance, saying the equipment would strengthen the National Immunisation Programme and improve the quality and reach of vaccination services throughout the country.
Regional Sales Manager of B Medical Systems, Ms Estee Teo, said the company was honoured to contribute to strengthening Laos’ immunisation programme and remains committed to ensuring the equipment provides long-term benefits for the country’s health system.
The Health and Nutrition Programme (LAO/035) is financed by the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and jointly implemented by the Lao Ministry of Health and LuxDev, the Luxembourg Development Cooperation Agency.
