Lao Telecom receives WSIS Prize 2025 in Geneva
The Lao Telecommunication Public Company Group’s “M moneyX” was awarded the WSIS Prize 2025 at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Lao Telecommunication Public Company (Lao Telecom), a leading telecommunications provider in Laos, has gained significant international recognition for its outstanding development work.
The Director General of Lao Telecommunication Public Company, Mr Souphol Chanthavixay, and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative to the Permanent Mission of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the United Nations Office and other international organisations in Geneva, Mr Daovy Vongxay attended the WSIS Prize 2025 ceremony on July 7. They were accompanied by members of the company’s management, including the Deputy Director General of Lao Telecommunication Public Company, Mr Niwat Yenkai, and the Chief Marketing Officer of Lao Mobile Money Sole Company Limited, Mr Chanthala Bounnaphol.
This international award, organised by the ITU (International Telecommunication Union), supports digital projects and innovations that promote the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The prize recognised the rapid growth of Lao Telecom’s e-wallet app “M moneyX” and its progress in expanding financial services —including payments, money transfers, bill payments, taxes and social security contributions — to millions of unbanked citizens.
The M moneyX app provides financial services to people without access to traditional banking, enabling them to participate in economic activities and improve national financial stability. Future plans include offering microcredit to families and individuals in need, particularly those excluded from banking services.
M moneyX complies fully with financial regulations and has joined LAPNET, an electronic payment platform established by the Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL). This integration allows M moneyX customers to access comprehensive financial services without needing a bank account.
In 2024, M moneyX subscribers grew from 300,000 to 800,000, and are projected to reach 1.1 million by 2025. The app also overcomes banking access limitations in remote areas as customers can perform secure transactions with just an internet connection. By addressing the critical need for financial inclusion in rural communities, M moneyX supports economic stability and improves livelihoods across Laos.
