Nursing teachers attending the workshop learn how to compile multiple choice questions for use in examinations.

Inje University elevates Lao nursing education through successful workshop

Inje University’s Leading University Project for International Cooperation (LUPIC) Team in the Republic of Korea made a significant step in raising the standard of nursing education in Laos with the project’s seventh workshop.
Those attending the workshop included 30 faculty members from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences at the University of Health Sciences in Vientiane and clinical teachers from the Nursing and Midwifery Board of the Ministry of Health.

Participants display their certificates after completing the 7th LUPIC Workshop in Vientiane.

The workshop took place in Vientiane from July 4-9, under the theme “Teaching and Learning Strategies and Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) Development”.
It aimed to enhance understanding and assessment in outcome-based curriculums and to improve staff’s ability to write problem-solving multiple choice questions for use in examinations.
Expert feedback was provided on the approximately 70 questions composed by faculty members by Project Manager Jina Oh (Professor of College of Nursing at Inje University).
In addition, a special lecture was given by the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Souksavanh Phanpaseuth, on writing multiple choice questions.
Notably, clinical teachers from the Ministry of Health’s Nursing and Midwifery Board, which is the body responsible for compiling questions for the National Licensing Examination for Nurses and Midwives, attended the workshop.
This expansion of participation is expected to significantly enhance the MCQ development capabilities of exam writers and improve the quality of the National Licensing Examination in Laos.
Prof Oh expressed the hope that “this workshop will lead to the improvement of teacher effectiveness evaluation and the quality of nursing education, and that it will be a good outcome of international cooperation in the field of education”, adding that “the scope of workshop participants will be gradually expanded”.
Since the introduction of the National Licensing Examination for Nurses and Midwives in 2021, 240 questions on seven subjects have been administered each year.
In the meantime, the project team has been providing technical support by creating lecture videos on the writing of multiple choice questions and uploading them to the website of the Healthcare Professional Council and the project’s official YouTube channel (LAIN-LUPIC Digital Archive) to improve accessibility and make it possible for anyone to learn.
This workshop is one of Inje University’s efforts supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea under the Ministry of Education in 2019.
The project aims to remodel the nursing curriculum of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, which is the only four-year nursing faculty in Laos, to strengthen the capacity of nurses and improve the healthcare environment.
