Laos, Vietnam strengthen prosecution ties with focus on transnational crime
 
The Lao and Vietnamese prosecution agencies will strengthen cooperation and make renewed efforts to combat transnational crime, improve legal assistance, and build professional capacity.
This commitment by both sides was highlighted during an official visit to Laos from July 15-17 by a high-level delegation from the Supreme People’s Procuracy of Vietnam led by the Prosecutor General, Mr Nguyen Huy Tien.
The delegation visited at the invitation of the President of the Office of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor, Mrs Livong Laoly.
During talks held on July 15, the two sides reviewed cooperation progress made under their 2022 cooperation agreement and discussed future collaboration in prosecution work, criminal justice cooperation and human resource development.
Vietnam’s continued support for the training and development of Lao prosecution personnel was recognised as an important contribution to improving professional standards and institutional capacity.
The two sides praised cooperation between offices in provinces sharing a common border, and noted that information sharing and close coordination had improved the handling of cross-border criminal cases and supported efforts to combat crime in border areas.
Following the talks, Mrs Livong and Mr Nguyen Huy Tien signed a Cooperation Plan for 2026-2028, endorsing future collaborative support.
The plan covers detention and rehabilitation centre management, monitoring of the enforcement of criminal court judgments, handling of civil cases, and strengthened legal oversight in anti-corruption operations.
A key event during the visit by the Vietnamese delegation was the 8th Conference of Procuracies of border provinces in Laos and Vietnam, which took place in Luang Prabang on July 16 under the theme “Effectively Strengthening International Cooperation on Criminal Matters to Prevent and Combat Transnational Crime, Especially Cybercrime”. 
The meeting noted the growing challenges posed by transnational crime, particularly cybercrime, online fraud, online gambling, money laundering, theft of personal data, and offences involving foreign elements.
Participants agreed to strengthen cooperation in information-sharing, evidence gathering, offender tracking, asset recovery and the execution of mutual legal assistance requests.
Delegates reaffirmed the importance of the meeting as a platform for strengthening coordination and the longstanding friendship and special solidarity between Laos and Vietnam. They agreed that the ninth meeting will be hosted by Vietnam in 2029.
