More heavy rain brings further risk of floods, landslides

The southerly monsoon covering Laos will bring heavy rain and strong winds to many parts of the country this week, with floods and landslides possible, the Meteorology and Hydrology Department has warned.

This house on the banks of the At River in Xon district, Huaphan province, was dislodged when the river overflowed last month after weeks of monsoon rain.

This means everyone should be prepared for weather extremes and keep track of forecasts.
Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast for Huaphan and Xieng Khuang provinces, where temperatures are predicted to range from 19-32C.
In the northwest, heavy rain and strong winds are also likely in parts of Luang Namtha, Bokeo, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Xayaboury provinces, where temperatures will range from 22-34C.
The central provinces of Vientiane, Borikhamxay and Khammuan can expect similar conditions, with temperatures ranging from 23-34C.
In Xaysomboun province, temperatures will be lower at 19-32C, with thundery showers and occasional strong winds also expected.
In the south there will be heavy rain and occasional strong wind gusts in some areas of Champassak, Xekong and Attapeu provinces, with temperatures ranging from 23-34C.
Plateau areas can expect the same conditions, but will have lower temperatures ranging from 19-31C.
More downpours are also forecast for Vientiane, with temperatures ranging from 24-34C.
Members of the public should follow weather forecasts through newspapers, radio and television or visit the Meteorology and Hydrology Department’s Facebook page and prepare for extreme weather if necessary.
Flooding that occurred in Oudomxay province on July 19 caused damage estimated at 7.6 billion kip. Houses and farmland were inundated and roads were flooded, with some being impassable, but provincial authorities are providing assistance, supervising repairs, and clearing roads.
