China backs construction of new school in Savannakhet
The Chinese government has provided a grant of more than 60 million yuan to rebuild Savannakhet Secondary School, supporting the Lao government’s efforts to modernise schools across the country and improve learning outcomes.
The project is funded by the “China Aid for Shared Future” scheme, with investment exceeding 60 million yuan. It is designed to provide students in Savannakhet province with improved learning facilities and a more modern educational environment.
The new school is expected to create better conditions for both students and teachers. Modern facilities will help improve teaching and learning and broaden students’ knowledge and skills.
The project reflects the growing cooperation between Laos and China in the education sector, particularly in improving educational facilities and supporting human resource development.
The Savannakhet Provincial Education and Sports Department held a groundbreaking ceremony on August 14 to officially launch the project, led by Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Mr Kingmano Phommahaxay.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Savannakhet Administration Committee Mr Thongsay Xayavongkhamdy said Savannakhet Secondary School was built in 1960 but has deteriorated significantly.
To improve the quality of education in Savannakhet province, the Chinese government has provided grant funding for the demolition of existing buildings, construction of new facilities, provision of teaching and learning equipment, and training for teachers in the effective use of the equipment.
The new school will be built on a 10,000-square-metre site and will have an indoor sports facility, staff offices, and other supporting facilities.
Construction is expected to take 14 months.
Deputy Minister of Education and Sports Mr Kingmano Phommahaxay thanked the Chinese government for its assistance, saying the project reflects the close and longstanding friendship and cooperation between Laos and China.
Grant aid from China will provide a safe and modern school building, while greatly improving teaching and learning, he said.
