Govt addresses economic pressures, flood risks at August meeting

The government is intensifying efforts to address economic headwinds, regulate fuel and consumer goods prices, and strengthen disaster preparedness as it evaluates issues of national importance at its monthly  meeting.
This month’s meeting, which began yesterday and continues today, is chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone at the Prime Minister’s Office. Deputy prime ministers, government members and representatives of relevant sectors are attending in person, while members of the Vientiane Administration Committee and provincial administrations are joining via video link.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the meeting is taking place against a backdrop of continued uncertainty in the regional and global environment, with conflicts in the Middle East and tensions in various regions contributing to volatility in the global economy.
These circumstances have affected Laos through fluctuations in fuel prices and currency exchange rates, higher transport and consumer goods costs, and a rise in the cost of living.
In addition, the country is also dealing with the aftermath of flooding in eight provinces.
The Prime Minister, deputy prime ministers and members of government have visited affected areas to assess conditions, address urgent problems, and deliver relief supplies.
The Prime Minister has instructed central and provincial disaster management committees to provide timely assistance and improve preparedness for possible disasters during the remainder of the year.
Against this backdrop, government leaders are reviewing major developments and priority work carried out in August and considering the government’s action plan and key tasks for September.
Participants are also reviewing progress in implementing the Resolution adopted by the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan, and the National Agenda on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication.
A wide range of draft laws, decrees and policies is also on the agenda. These include revised draft laws on the Government, State-Funded Procurement, Control of Alcoholic Beverages, Health Insurance, Social Security, and Civil Aviation.
Other matters include a revised draft of the Decree on Poverty and Development Standards, a draft special policy for the development of Huaphan and Phongsaly provinces, and a draft order on improving policies and strengthening the management of mining operations.
The meeting is also considering revised draft laws on Cybercrime Prevention and Suppression, Lao People’s Public Security Forces, and Administrative Positions of Civil Servants.
Prime Minister Sonexay called on participants to consider each issue thoroughly and provide constructive feedback.
He urged members of government to focus on practical solutions and key priorities, so that the meeting can produce concrete and effective outcomes for the work of the government in the months ahead.
