New Namphan power plant to strengthen power supply

A new 330-megawatt Namphan power plant to be built in Xiengkhouang province will help provide stable electricity to industries in northern Laos, particularly to power grid stability improvement.
B Rich Namphan Power Sole Co., Ltd. signed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract with China Western Power Industrial Co., Ltd. and Dongdok Construction and Installation Engineering Sole Co., Ltd. on Wednesday to build the plant.
The signing ceremony took place in Vientiane and was attended by Standing Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Committee for Investment Promotion and Management, Mr Saleumxay Kommasith.

The prestigious event was attended by representatives from relevant ministries and departments, company delegates, and various development partners who gathered to witness the signing.
The ceremony also brought together representatives of Électricité du Laos, Phongsupthavy Group Sole Co., Ltd., China Western Power Industrial Co., Ltd., project contractors and other partners involved in the US$202.95 million project.
The plant will be built in Namphan village, Khoun district, in Xiengkhouang province.
According to the operational plan, the project will start construction and expect to complete it by the end of 2029.

Speaking at the event, Managing Director of B Rich Namphan Power Sole Co., Ltd., Mr Bounthieng Duangpaseuth, said the project aims to provide a stable and reliable supply of electricity to northern Laos, particularly during the dry season when hydropower generation can fall as water levels decline.
The plant will sell electricity to Électricité du Laos, which will supply small and medium-sized industries in the northern region.
Mr Bounthieng said hydropower is a major source of electricity for Laos, but lower water levels during the dry months can affect generation. This can create challenges for industries that depend on a steady supply of power to maintain production.

The Namphan plant is designed to help fill this gap. Unlike hydropower, the coal-fired plant can generate electricity continuously when sufficient fuel is available, helping provide a more dependable source of power during periods of low water availability.
A stable electricity supply can make a real difference to businesses. Factories need reliable power to run machinery, process products and keep production schedules on track. Interruptions can affect output and increase operating costs.
The 330MW plant will be the first coal-fired power project in Laos to use supercritical technology, according to the developer.
The project began taking shape in 2015, when the developer carried out an economic feasibility study. The study identified a suitable site and a coal source capable of supplying the plant for at least 25 years.
China Western Power Industrial Co., Ltd. will supply materials and equipment and supervision of installation works, while Dongdok Construction and Installation Engineering Sole Co., Ltd. will serve as the construction contractor.
The project brings together Lao and Chinese companies and reflects cooperation in the energy sector, combining equipment supply, technical expertise and construction capacity.
The plant is expected to contribute not only to electricity supply but also to industrial development in northern Laos. More reliable power can give businesses greater confidence to maintain production and consider future expansion.
As Laos works to strengthen industrial activity and promote economic growth across the country, dependable energy will remain an important foundation.
With a planned capacity of 330MW, the Namphan plant aims to strengthen that foundation and provide northern industries with a more stable source of electricity, particularly during the dry season.
