Stone carving exhibition fosters cultural exchange between Laos and China

In a key cultural milestone, Huayan Temple in Chongqing, in collaboration with That Luang Marsh Specific Economic Zone (SEZ), has launched an exhibition featuring ancient Chinese stone carvings in Laos.

The exhibition officially opened on August 23 at the SEZ, showcasing selected stone sculptures from the Huayan Temple, offering visitors a unique insight into China’s ancient artistic traditions.

The Huayan Temple, located in Chongqing, China, sets out to preserve and showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage. Over the years, the temple has gathered a collection of over 1,600 stone plates, each depicting aspects of Chinese history, beliefs, and natural wonders.
Joining the exhibition’s opening ceremony were the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Vilayvong Bouddakham, the Head of the Investment Promotion and Administration Office, Mr Sonephaseuth Dalavong and prominent businesspersons investing in the SEZ.
The exhibition aims to foster greater cultural exchange between Laos and China amid increasing globalisation as part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which promotes cultural and artistic exchanges between countries along the BRI route.
In addition, the exhibition hopes to promote exchange between Chinese and Lao Buddhism, highlighting the importance of religious and cultural collaboration. During the event, plans to build a temple and meditation centre in Laos were discussed, highlighting the wish of both nations to further develop Buddhism in their respective countries. This initiative also aims to encourage mutual learning and strengthen the friendship between each Buddhist community.
The exhibition is seen as an important step in promoting the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage while encouraging economic development and artistic innovation, with both nations looking to enjoy similar cultural exchange activities in the future.
