Global Vision gives boost to student management in Kasy district

A teachers’ capacity building workshop took place from August 19-21, organised by Global Vision, a Non-Governmental Organisation of the Republic of Korea, as part of the Civil Society Cooperation Programme for 2024-2026 called “Kasy District Secondary School Opportunities Improvement Project for minority youth in Laos (level 2)”.
The workshop was organised in cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Kasy district Education and Sports Office.
Sixty teachers from five upper secondary schools in Kasy district were invited to attend the workshop to improve their curriculum-building, student management and technical skills, such as the use of computers and Social Networking Services (SNS).

The workshop also welcomed the construction of the new Kasy district education centre, which opened for the first time since it was built.
The main aim of the workshop was to progress the project’s central goal of “Better education in Kasy”, by improving teacher capacity. Global Vision Laos Branch Director Kyu Hyun Baek said “Ultimately, our organisation hopes to reduce the student dropout rate by providing a better teaching environment and building better relationships with teachers.”
During the three-day workshop, teachers learnt about strategies and theories that make learning more effective and results-oriented.
One of the lectures was given by Prof. Nivanh Saiynavong on ‘Outcome based education theory’ in relation to curriculum building, a system that designs curriculums based on desired student outcomes.
Using this as a target, teachers can create content and teaching strategies to help students achieve good results.
Another lecture was titled ‘Basic knowledge about counselling’, delivered by Prof. Lindara Vongphachanh MBA, Head of the Career Counselling Office. Both lecturers are professors at the Faculty of Economics and Business Management, National University of Laos.
Prof. Lindara said teachers must act as counsellors and motivators, to inspire their students to be aware of and make use of their full potential. Her talk described effective counselling strategies, from consensus to counselling objectives in relation to education, careers, scholarships and higher education, and social counselling.
Lastly, teachers learned about children’s rights through the Gender Development Association and the need to raise awareness of gender equality. The aim is to deepen understanding around gender roles, put a stop to violence against children, and emphasise the critical importance of children’s education.
Besides the academic content, participants also learned about ICT skills and Social Networking Services, which provide the necessary technical skills for modern teaching and student management.
The ICT class focused on the use of Microsoft Office Excel in class management and the development of curriculums.
In the SNS class, the lecturer explained ways to take good photographs, edit videos using a mobile app, and how to share photos, videos and news through the SNS.
Using these methods, teachers can inform parents about school activities, which will give them useful insight into their children’s lives at school and help them to understand the importance of education.
One of the teachers attending the workshop said “We now have easy access to modern technology, but I always felt I needed more know-how about how to use software effectively for the benefit of students and our school in general. Thanks to this workshop, I am now confident about using these technologies in managing my classes and sharing the school’s news and daily life more engagingly.”
All participants eagerly participated and expressed interest in all of the lectures.
Global Vision Project Manager Bomi Jang said “We believe that education is the future of Laos. All of the teachers have gained useful knowledge and should be able to put this to practical use to improve the quality of education in Kasy district.”
With the support of KOICA, Global Vision has provided and supported improvements in the learning environment through construction of the education centre, teacher support, extracurricular programmes, career exploration, and parent awareness education in Kasy district since 2021 and is planning to provide further support from 2024 to 2026.
