Empowering women entrepreneurs through digital innovation

Vientiane became a vibrant hub for female entrepreneurs as the US Department of State hosted the Digital Innovations for Female Entrepreneurs in ASEAN Meeting (DIFEM) on September 11-12 in the newly opened DoubleTree Hotel as part of the US-ASEAN Connect Digital Economy Series.

Leading entrepreneurs express their views during the Digital Innovations for Female Entrepreneurs in ASEAN Meeting.

This pivotal event aimed at fostering economic growth and innovation among micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the region.
DIFEM aligned with Laos’ ASEAN chair year priorities, focusing on addressing financial gaps in MSMEs and promoting adoption of the Roadmap on Digital Trade Standards.
Over two days, 75 entrepreneurs from across ASEAN gathered to engage with leading technology companies, government officials, and fellow MSMEs. Together, they explored strategies for business optimisation and commercial collaboration in an increasingly digital landscape.
The event featured expert-led discussions on the future of the digital economy in ASEAN, emphasising how emerging markets like Laos can leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to “leapfrog” traditional economic milestones.
Participants in-person and online learned from dynamic panels led by female fintech experts, digital and Al entrepreneurs and from a high-level dialogue between the US Ambassador to Laos, Heather Variava, in conversation with Ambassador Grata Endah Werdaningtyas from the Republic of Indonesia, Ambassador Deena Joy Amatong of the Philippines, and Ambassador Morakot Sriswadi from Thailand.
US Ambassador Heather Variava emphasised the importance of connecting female founders and digital entrepreneurs to foster access and opportunities in the digital economy across Southeast Asia.
She highlighted the need for more women in AI, fintech, and leadership roles to achieve equitable growth.
Ambassador Variava also acknowledged the innovative spirit of women in the region, citing examples of female pioneers in digital solutions, healthcare, and sustainable practices. She noted that while Southeast Asia is a hub for digital innovation, there remains a significant need to bridge the digital divide, especially in rural areas.
The meeting not only served as a platform for knowledge exchange but also highlighted the immense growth potential within ASEAN’s last-mile markets.
As DIFEM showcased, empowering women in entrepreneurship is crucial for driving sustainable economic development in the region. The US Department of State’s commitment to fostering this environment promises a brighter future for female entrepreneurs across ASEAN.
Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr Manothong Vongxay highlighted the vital role of women-led enterprises in driving economic value.
“Women-led enterprises are driving innovation and economic growth in the region as well as in Laos. By leveraging digital technologies, we can unlock new opportunities for female entrepreneurs, enabling them to thrive on the global stage,” he said.
