Laos, Vietnam to bolster ties in economics, communication
Lao and Vietnamese leaders on Tuesday discussed support for cooperation in strategic development projects in the two countries and agreed to strengthen links between their economic and communication sectors.
These projects involve the development of closer land, sky and river links and the creation of conditions that will spur faster social and economic progress in the two countries.
The talks took place when the Secretary General of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party and the President of Laos, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith, and his delegation on Tuesday met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Mr Phạm Minh Chính during an official visit to Vietnam from September 10 to 13.
Mr Thongloun thanked Mr Pham for his warm welcome and expressed pleasure at meeting him again.
The purpose of the Lao delegation’s visit is for the Party Secretary Generals and Presidents of Laos and Vietnam, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith and Mr To Lam respectively, to review Laos’ ongoing chairmanship of ASEAN and highlight the successes achieved to date.
The two sides expressed great appreciation for their continuing strong relationship, special solidarity and all-round cooperation, which they agreed to expand, especially through closer cooperation in trade and investment.
The value of trade between Laos and Vietnam rose to US$1.1 billion in the first seven months of 2024, an increase of 17 percent compared to 2023.
President Thongloun offered best wishes on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of Vietnam’s national day on September 2 and the 62nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Vietnam.
On behalf of the Party, government and people of Laos, the Lao President thanked the Party, government and people of Vietnam for their wholehearted support for Laos in the battle to achieve liberation from foreign domination and since then for the ongoing protection and development of Laos.
A high-ranking Vietnamese delegation will come to Laos for the ASEAN Summits in Vientiane next month and will attend the 47th Partner Committee Meeting between the two governments.
