Laos, WIPO partner to enhance intellectual property management

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) have inked an agreement on cooperation in the development of intellectual property office business services.
The agreement was signed in Vientiane on Wednesday between the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mr Malaythong Kommasith, and WIPO Director General, Mr Daren Tang.

The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce Ms Chansouk Sengphachanh and Deputy Director General, Mr Hasan Kleib, along with ministry officials and a WIPO delegation.
The partnership aims to improve intellectual property management, which will see the World Intellectual Property Organisation help to improve document management, online services, and information searches for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
The organisation will also assist with the development of modern systems and technologies to simplify the procedures involved.
Another goal is to build the skills and knowledge of employees to enhance professionalism and quality in the development and management of intellectual property.
The partnership will also promote innovation and creative thinking by working together and creating awareness of the importance of intellectual property rights as a driver of economic growth.
International cooperation in this field will be expanded, along with the sharing of information among relevant stakeholders.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce, through the Department of Intellectual Property, will work with WIPO and various countries to promote and link information in the implementation of intellectual property management.
WIPO will draw up guidelines on the infrastructure of information technology and recommend appropriate technology to meet the needs of the ministry and the Department of Intellectual Property.
