Head of the district Public Security Office, Lieutenant Colonel Viengkham Chanthavongsa, said police arrested 330 people during the course of their operations. Of these, 227 people were arrested on charges of dealing in drugs and 87 were arrested for possession of drugs.
Police also arrested one person for selling e-cigarettes and five others on charges of trading in kratom products.
One such case occurred on August 9, when officers from the Suppression and Anti-Narcotics Unit in Xaythany district carried out a raid in Nonsa-art village and detained one person in possession of 2,000 amphetamine pills.
Police also carried out raids in Phonhaikham and Hatkieng villages when they detained four people and seized 652 packets containing 3,915,200 amphetamine pills, 21kg of crystal meth, and other substances.
The large number of cases handled is the result of the ongoing crackdown under the government’s special National Agenda to curb the burgeoning drug trade in Laos.
During property raids and interceptions of transported drug consignments, police seized large amounts of amphetamine, crystal meth, heroin, cannabis, opium, ketamine and cocaine.
Authorities also confiscated vehicles, weapons, ammunition and explosives in the course of their operations.
In other areas of development and law enforcement, the government is building strong political foundations and developing village groups as supporting units, as well as tackling the misuse and loss of land, and encroachment into protected forest areas.
Security officials are also tightening up on illegal immigration and trade, and the pilfering of natural resources in border areas.
At the same time, authorities are working to tackle social problems in relation to drug use and have opened more rehabilitation centres to wean drug users off their addiction.
The government is also taking steps to suppress cybercrime, hacking, and the online slandering of the Party and state and government leaders.
