Seminar explores opportunities for Lao workers in S. Korea

Discussions were held between Laos, Korea University, and related organisations about employment opportunities in Korea, and through this, the working environment of Laotian workers in Korea was discussed.

Held in Vientiane on Friday, the meeting was titled “Policy Seminar on Lao Workers Dispatched to Korea” and centered on improving the working environment for Lao workers in Korea and future policy improvements.

of the ministry’s Skills Development and Employment Department, Ms Anousone Kamsingsavat, and brought together participants from a range of organisations.
In her opening remarks, Ms Anousone stressed the need to improve Lao workers’ skills so they could better address Korea’s labour shortage.
“This seminar explores opportunities for Lao workers in S. Korea, while both countries can win-win, and closer cooperation is needed to build a more efficient and satisfactory environment,” she said.
Ambassador Jeong Young-soo of the Republic of Korea said the seminar could positively impact worker exchange between the two nations and appriciated Laos for its support in addressing Seminar explores opportunities for Lao workers in S. Korea worker shortages.
The seminar was attended by officials from both countries, together with 22 professors and students from the Korean university.
One participant noted the need for further academic research to develop effective policies that would improve conditions for Lao workers in Korea. Some 2,800 Lao nationals were working in the Republic of Korea on short-term contracts running from 2022 to 2023, an official from Laos’ Ministry of Social Welfare told the Vientiane Times.
Workers are employed on Korean farms and other areas of industry under the Employment Permit System and the Seasonal Worker Programme agreed to between the two countries.
Korean authorities have requested the dispatch of at least 1,500 Lao workers to the country each year.
