ASEAN leaders meet for talks with representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly in Vientiane on Wednesday.

ASEAN leaders hold talks with AIPA representatives

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on Wednesday presided over a meeting between ASEAN leaders and representatives of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) at the National Convention Centre in Vientiane.
During the interface with AIPA representatives, led by the President of the Lao National Assembly, Mr Saysomphone Phomvihane, and the President of the 45th AIPA, Dr Sonexay outlined current developments in ASEAN, especially the progress made in implementing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025.
He also talked about the fulfilment of the ASEAN Priorities 2024 under Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship alongside the chair’s efforts to build a more connected and resilient region in order to take advantage of opportunities and respond to various challenges.
The Lao prime minister also outlined the progress made in the development of strategic plans to implement the ASEAN Community Vision to 2045, as a 20-year vision towards building a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred ASEAN.
Mr Saysomphone, on behalf of the President of the 45th AIPA, briefed ASEAN leaders about the progress made in parliamentary work under the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
He also introduced AIPA’s recommendations with regard to regional cooperation in enhancing ASEAN connectivity and resilience, narrowing development gaps, developing infrastructure, fostering trade, investment and tourism, and strengthening ASEAN centrality in cooperation with external partners, in line with the priorities of Laos’ ASEAN chairmanship.
ASEAN leaders expressed their appreciation for the contribution of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly to the ASEAN Community building process.
They anticipated further support from the AIPA for efforts to strengthen the ASEAN Community, especially through implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, building on the outcomes of the ongoing and previous ASEAN Summits, and ensuring that the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 be adopted in 2025 efficiently and effectively.
