ASEAN-Canada Special Summit to strengthen economic cooperation
Leaders of ASEAN and Canada committed to strengthening economic cooperation by accelerating the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Area (ACAFTA) negotiations towards an early conclusion.

Both sides met at the ASEAN-Canada Special Summit on Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience in Vientiane on October 10. The meeting was presided over by Lao Prime Minister Mr Sonexay Siphandone and attended by ASEAN leaders, the Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, and the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste as an observer.
The meeting reviewed the progress of ASEAN-Canada relations and charted the future course for implementing the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership. Both sides highly valued the 46 years of ASEAN-Canada dialogue relations, particularly the elevation of these relations to a Strategic Partnership in 2023. This elevation reflects the fruitful outcomes of cooperation and the shared commitment of ASEAN and Canada to further enhancing their mutually beneficial relationship in the years ahead.
Moving forward, the meeting agreed to ensure the effective implementation of the ASEAN-Canada Plan of Action (2021-2025) and to begin developing a successor Plan of Action for the 2026-2030 period, set for adoption next year. On this occasion, the leaders of ASEAN and Canada endorsed the ASEAN-Canada Joint Leaders’ Statement on Enhancing ASEAN Connectivity and Resilience.
Laos, as the country Coordinator for ASEAN-Canada dialogue relations from 2024 to 2027, reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with ASEAN Member States and Canada to further strengthen the ASEAN-Canada Strategic Partnership.
Canada has been one of ASEAN’s long-standing dialogue partners since 1977. Over the years, ASEAN-Canada relations have steadily expanded, culminating in the elevation to a Strategic Partnership in 2023.
