ASEAN ambassadors congratulate newly-elected Lao PM

Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith has received congratulations from ASEAN ambassadors accredited to Laos following his election as Prime Minister, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation and regional ties.
The meeting took place at the Office of the Prime Minister on October 16, when the ambassadors paid a courtesy call to offer their best wishes to the new head of government.
Speaking on behalf of the ambassadors, the Ambassador of Myanmar to Laos, U Aung Ko, who chairs the ASEAN Consultative Meeting, congratulated Mr Saleumxay on his election, saying it reflected the confidence and trust placed in him by the Lao Party, State and people.
He expressed confidence that Mr Saleumxay would draw on his knowledge, capabilities, experience and achievements to lead the government and people in protecting, building and developing Laos, and in advancing national development.
Mr Saleumxay thanked the ambassadors for their congratulations and acknowledged their continued cooperation and support for Laos.
He commended the ASEAN Consultative Meeting for serving as an important channel for communication and coordination, helping strengthen relations between Laos and other ASEAN member states through both bilateral and multilateral ties.
ASEAN is a key pillar of the government’s foreign policy and an important regional platform for promoting peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development, he added.
He said the government would continue to pursue national development priorities, focusing on the goals outlined in the National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2026-2030 and Laos’ graduation from Least Developed Country status, while making progress on the road to building an independent and self-reliant economy.
Prime Minister Saleumxay also congratulated the Philippines on its chairmanship of ASEAN and expressed his intention to attend the 49th ASEAN Summit and related summits in Manila next month.
He further reiterated Laos’ readiness to cooperate with and support Singapore as it assumes the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027.
