Speaking at a reception held at the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Sonexay Siphandone gave a warm welcome to the Vietnamese National Assembly President Mr Tran Thanh Man and expressed sincere appreciation for the participation of the high-level delegation in the meeting.
The Prime Minister said the visit to Laos by Mr Tran Thanh Man and his delegation served to further strengthen the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the parties, governments and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.
PM Sonexay extended his sympathies to the Party, government and people of Vietnam for the losses suffered during Typhoon Yagi in Hanoi and the northern provinces, as well as the damage caused by Typhoon Soulik, which triggered flooding and landslides in the central provinces of Vietnam in September. These storms caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction, with many people missing.
Prime Minister Sonexay expressed confidence that, under the strong leadership of the Party and government, and with the active contribution of the National Assembly and the resilience of the Vietnamese people, the difficulties currently being experienced in the wake of the storms would be overcome.
He praised the remarkable achievements of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, particularly in implementing the resolutions of the 13th Party Congress and the Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2021-2025.
He also lauded the outcomes of the special session of Vietnam’s 15th National Assembly in mid-August, which addressed critical national issues and contributed to political stability, public security, and the gradual improvement of livelihoods in Vietnam.
PM Sonexay noted that despite the current global challenges, the special relationship and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam continued to strengthen, with regular reciprocal visits taking place between high-level delegations from the two parties and governments.
He also commented on the growth in trade, investment and logistics between Laos and Vietnam. The value of two-way trade stood at US$1.1 billion as of September this year, a 17 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The Prime Minister highlighted Vietnam’s status as one of the leading foreign investors in Laos, with involvement in 241 projects and registered capital of US$5.47 billion. In addition, Official Development Assistance provided by Vietnam so far this year was recorded at 719,237 billion Vietnamese dong.
A bilateral meeting held between Laos and Vietnam on Friday, attended by Dr Sonexay Siphandone, Mr Tran Thanh Man, and senior officials from both countries, covered key issues concerning various aspects of cooperation.
Discussions centred on political, economic and legislative cooperation, as well as between the two countries’ justice sectors.
The ongoing General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, which takes the theme “The Role of Parliaments in Enhancing Connectivity and Inclusive Growth of ASEAN”, aims to strengthen regional integration, boost economic growth, and improve living standards across ASEAN.
