Cultivating a Greener Future with Coffee in Northern Laos
Sustainable coffee farming in northern Laos may offer benefits beyond household income, strengthening farmers’ connection with nature while contributing to climate change mitigation. Research in Viengkham District, Luang Prabang Province, highlights the environmental and psychological benefits of this approach. The findings offer useful insights for rural development in Laos, where improving smallholder livelihoods while promoting sustainable land management remains an important challenge.
The research, conducted by a South Korean research team comprising Professor Hye-Jung Oh of Chongshin University, researchers Da-ryeong Kim and Su-jeong Park from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Seoul National University, and Bo-ae Yoon and So-dam Lee of Wonders International, examined how agricultural training influences farmers’ connection with nature.
Although training focused on practical techniques such as pruning and pest control rather than explicit environmental education, greater participation was associated with a stronger connection to nature. Farmers who attended more sessions and expanded their coffee cultivation showed a stronger emotional bond with their natural surroundings, suggesting that practical agricultural training can foster environmental awareness and stewardship.
The research also highlights coffee farming’s potential contribution to climate change mitigation. Wonders International has supported the planting of approximately 206,600 coffee trees to date. Preliminary estimates suggest that, as these trees mature, they could absorb approximately 120 metric tons of CO₂ annually. This estimate draws on field measurements of 70 randomly selected coffee trees, using trunk diameter and allometric equations to estimate aboveground and belowground biomass and calculate carbon storage, with the results extrapolated to the wider tree population.
Since 2019, Wonders International, a South Korea-based NGO, has promoted sustainable coffee farming in northern Laos through seedling support, technical training, facility improvements, farmer empowerment, and market development. With support from the KRX Happiness Foundation, founded by the Korea Exchange to advance a sustainable and prosperous society, Wonders is strengthening the coffee value chain while promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
Together, these findings highlight coffee farming’s potential to combine livelihood development with environmental protection. By linking income opportunities with long-term land management, sustainable coffee cultivation may offer a promising approach to strengthening rural livelihoods and environmental resilience in northern Laos.
