Familiarisation Trip 2026: Promoting wonderful Indonesia through Yogyakarta’s cultural heritage and tourism experiences

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vientiane, in cooperation with the Tourism Department of the Provincial Government of Yogyakarta and the Association of the Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA) facilitated the “Familiarisation Trip (Famtrip) 2026: Journey to Wonderful Jogja”.
The programme brought together seven participants from three countries – two from Laos, four from China, and one from Pakistan – who travelled to Yogyakarta during October 22-26.
The Lao participants were renowned travel influencers Sammy Go and Mini Trips, who are expected to help introduce Yogyakarta’s tourism attractions and cultural experiences to Lao audiences through their social media accounts.
Their participation reflected the growing importance of digital content creators in promoting Indonesia’s destinations and inspiring international travellers to discover the Southeast Asian country.

Yogyakarta, popularly known as Jogja, is a special region in central Java, Indonesia, which is celebrated for its rich Javanese culture, royal traditions and historical landmarks. Home to the iconic Borobudur Buddhist Temple and Prambanan Hindu Temple, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Yogyakarta offers a unique combination of history, traditional arts, batik craftsmanship, local cuisine and natural landscapes.
Throughout the five-day programme, the participants explored a variety of destinations showcasing Yogyakarta’s natural beauty, historical landmarks, living traditions and creative industries. Highlights included the Merapi Jeep Lava Tour, Prambanan Temple and Borobudur Temple.
The programme featured immersive cultural experiences, including traditional Javanese practices and herbal drinks in Sidorejo village, visits to the Yogyakarta Sultan’s Palace (Kraton) and Taman Sari Water Castle, and a walking tour of Kotagede. The participants also explored the region’s creative tourism potential through a wooden batik painting workshop in Krebet Tourism Village.

An evening featuring the Ramayana Ballet against the backdrop of Prambanan Temple offered the participants an opportunity to appreciate the richness of Indonesian performing arts. The itinerary also included a royal cultural experience at Royal Ambarrukmo, featuring the traditional Patehan tea ceremony and Jemparingan archery, and a networking dinner with local tourism stakeholders.
Through this initiative, the Embassy of Indonesia in Vientiane seeks to strengthen Indonesia’s tourism presence in international markets, particularly in Laos, by increasing awareness of Yogyakarta as a destination for cultural discovery, heritage tourism and authentic local experiences.
The involvement of Lao travel influencers provided an additional channel to share these experiences with their audiences and encourage greater interest in visiting Indonesia.
The “Familiarisation Trip 2026: Journey to Wonderful Jogja” reflected Indonesia’s continued commitment to promote its diverse tourism offerings to international audiences and strengthen people-to-people connections through tourism.
