This commitment was made when President Thongloun Sisoulith met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the BRICS and Developing Countries Summit last week in Kazan, Russia, according to the press department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.
The two presidents agreed to maintain mutual support in multilateral frameworks, both within BRICS and other international arenas, as they work to deepen cooperation on global issues impacting both nations.
The two leaders praised past cooperation between Laos and Russia, highlighting the benefits achieved for both countries, particularly in politics, defence, maintenance of peace, and education.
They committed to advancing agreements from President Thongloun’s visit to Russia in May, focusing on economic ties, trade, investment, energy, transportation, science, technology, and tourism.
President Thongloun thanked Russia for its consistent support, which he noted has contributed significantly to Laos’ socio-economic development.
He also congratulated Russia on successfully hosting the 2024 BRICS Summit and assuming the BRICS chairmanship this year.
In turn, President Putin thanked Laos for participating in the summit, describing Laos’ presence as a meaningful contribution to fostering closer ties with Russia.
The Russian President praised Laos for successfully hosting the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits this month, which he said reflects the country’s growing influence in regional diplomacy and cooperation.
