Speaking to reporters recently, the Governor of Luang Prabang city, Mr Viengthong Hathsachanh, said tourism in the province and its capital city had exploded during Visit Laos Year 2024, and visitors had returned in droves since the restrictions imposed by the Covid pandemic faded in everyone’s memory.
He also attributed the surge in visitor numbers to the improvement in services, the attractions of the local lifestyle and cultural traditions, and ease of travel to the province.
The province is now served by an efficient rail service and an increasing number of international flights.
Mr Viengthong said he expected that thousands more people would visit the province in the remaining two months of this year.
Luang Prabang city has received several official accolades for its tourist attractions, the most recent of which was the “One Hundred Stories of Laos, Sustainable Tourism Destination of the World” award.
Luang Prabang is one of the most well-known provinces in Laos and is a top tourist draw because of its riverside location, old temples, quaint streets and alleyways, festivals, and scenic beauty.
The town’s old quarter was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1995 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), which deemed that its architecture was culturally significant and worthy of protection by the United Nations.
Other popular attractions in and around the provincial capital include the Phou Si stupa, Xieng Thong temple, Sae waterfall, Kuangxi waterfall, and the colourful night market.
