Closer cooperation in this work was agreed upon during an official visit to Laos by Politburo member of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the National Assembly of People’s Power, Esteban Lazo Hernandez, and his delegation from November 3-6.
His visit is in response to an invitation from Lao Politburo member Dr Xaysomphone Phomvihane, who is President of Laos’ National Assembly.
Dr Xaysomphone welcomed Esteban Lazo Hernandez and his delegation, who are also taking part in events to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Laos and Cuba.
He congratulated Mr Hernandez on his election as the President of the National Assembly of People’s Power in April last year.
Dr Xaysomphone said he highly valued Mr Hernandez’s visit to Laos, noting that this is his first visit since his election as the President of Cuba’s National Assembly.
The two National Assembly presidents reported on past activities and Dr Xaysomphone suggested that the two legislative bodies sign a new Memorandum of Cooperation.
They also agreed to step up cooperation in agriculture, education, sports and the banking and justice sectors.
They will further share in regional and international parliamentary platforms such as the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, with the aim of preserving peace, stability and cooperation towards the sustainable development of the region and internationally.
A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the two National Assembly presidents.
The official visit by the Cuban delegation to Laos is seen as an important contribution to the strengthening of friendship and cooperation between the parties, states and peoples of Laos and Cuba, and especially between Laos’ National Assembly and Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power.
