Mrs Phonevanh Outhavong and Mr Bakhodir Burkhanov chair a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan. |
The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Mrs Phonevanh Outhavong and the UN Resident Coordinator to Laos, Mr Bakhodir Burkhanov.
Participants discussed comments made by development partners on the plan, with the aim of ensuring it aligns with Laos’ current development situation both nationally and locally, and can be successfully implemented. One of the main goals is to resolve the country’s chronic economic and financial problems.
The meeting is also part of preparations for the Round Table Implementation Meeting, which will take place in Vientiane on November 14.
It is recognised that astute formulation of the national socio-economic development plan, through the participation of all parties concerned, is essential for guiding Laos on a productive development path.
Collaboration with development partners is an integral part of this process and Mrs Phonevanh called on the country’s supporters to make a strong contribution to the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan.
The plan is an important component of the government’s Vision to 2030, fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals, graduation from Least Developed Country status, and involvement with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).
It is also closely linked to the upcoming 12th Party Congress and ongoing efforts to tackle inflation, weak currency exchange rates, public debt, low productivity, the school drop-out rate, and the shortage of workers.
It is therefore essential that the plan addresses these issues in depth in order to revitalise the economy, spur growth, strengthen the production and service base, and improve state administration.
It is envisaged that the next development plan will create a strong foundation for the creation of an independent economy through effective management of the macro-economy and a skilled workforce.
