Study in Europe Fair highlights education opportunities
More than 600 students, other interested participants and education administrators gathered at the Study in Europe Fair 2024 at the Parkson Mall on Saturday to explore education opportunities at institutions in European countries.
The event was organised by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Laos, in collaboration with Team Europe Partners (France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Luxembourg), the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Sports, and the National University of Laos.
Universities in the provinces joined the fair online through a Facebook livestream.
The event was organised to publicise European study programmes, including Erasmus+ (EU scholarships), DAAD (German scholarships), French scholarships through Campus France, Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungarian scholarships), and programmes offered in Italy and Luxembourg.
European scholarships offer Lao students, teachers, and researchers the chance to experience higher education in Europe.
Speaking at the event, Director General of the Higher Education Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr Lavanh Vongkhamsane said that European scholarships, and the partnership between European and Lao education institutions, have improved human resource development in Laos.
“These cooperation frameworks have contributed to the development of the Lao PDR in general, and education and human resource development in particular,” the director said, adding that a skilled workforce is needed to meet the growing needs of socio-economic development.
Also speaking at the fair, EU Ambassador to Laos Mark Gallagher said education is more than an individual journey - it’s the foundation for “a strong, vibrant future for Lao youth and, in turn, for Laos itself”.
“Through the EU Global Gateway initiative, Team Europe is committed to investing in education and skills development that empower young people to become leaders, innovators, and contributors to their communities and beyond.”
Vice President of the National University of Laos, Asst. Prof. Thongsouk Keomany, underscored how the country’s first and biggest higher learning institution’s partnership with European partners has contributed to human resource development in Laos.
Up to 2024, the university has shared in more than 20 Erasmus+ capacity building projects including Erasmus (EU) international mobility programmes.
“It is expected that this kind of good cooperation and partnerships we have with European universities and the EU Delegation to Laos, in particular, will benefit our country’s higher educational training,” Asst. Prof. Thongsouk said.
The highlight of the fair was the Alumni Corner session where attendees enjoyed one-on-one interactions with Lao alumni who previously studied in Europe. Interactive activities were also available throughout the day.
The event was a success, with many participants expressing interest in applying for a scholarship in Europe, where many programmes are now accepting applications until the first quarter of 2025.
