Lao Telecom marks achievements over past 28 years
The Lao Telecommunications Public Company celebrated its 28th anniversary on Monday, with the focus on the firm’s significant achievements and contributions to telecom services in the country.
In line with the state’s policy of promoting foreign investments, the Lao Telecommunications Public Company was officially established on November 11, 1996. It was formed through the merger of the Lao Telecommunications Company and Shinawatra Telecom Co Ltd as a joint venture, with the Lao government holding 51 percent of the shares and Sennington Investments Singapore holding 49 percent.
At the ceremony on November 11, the Director General of the Lao Telecommunications Public Company, Mr Souphol Chanthavixay, said, “Today’s ceremony is an opportunity to evaluate and summarise the activities and business operations of Lao Telecom over the past 28 years.
“The company’s board of directors has successfully guided Lao Telecom through numerous challenges, leading the company to grow step by step, both in terms of quantity and quality, and ensuring that our telecommunications infrastructure remains modernised.”
Over the past 28 years, the Lao Telecommunications Public Company has focused on expanding its services nationwide. Today, Lao Telecom offers a comprehensive range of telecommunications services, including mobile broadband services via modern 4G, 4.5G and 5G systems, international roaming services.
It was the first company in Laos to offer roaming services across ASEAN countries with a single-price package. Additionally, the company provides fixed broadband services and the M-Money X electronic wallet service.
To adapt to the digital age, Lao Telecom has launched numerous projects, such as AI, IoT, Big Data, Cloud, Cybersecurity, Blockchain, the M-Money X platform, the M Services app, and the HR platform.

Lao Telecom has also established a 24/7 monitoring and resolution center, certified to ISO international standards, to ensure the quality of its network.
The company has a nationwide service centre, allowing customers convenient access to its products and services. Alongside its business operations, Lao Telecom has implemented improvements to regulations and social welfare policies, enhancing the standard of living for its employees.
Throughout the past 28 years, the business operations of the Lao Telecommunications Public Company have earned the trust of users and recognition from the Party and Government, and received several prestigious awards, including the First Class Labour Medal, the 9th ASEAN Entrepreneur Award 2024 at the 25th World Knowledge Forum in Incheon, South Korea, the Stevie Award for Technology Excellence 2024 in New York City, the ASEAN Business Award 2024 during the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits held in Vientiane, and government certificates for outstanding contributions to Laos’ telecommunications sector.The Minister of Technology and Communications, Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, praised Lao Telecom’s achievements, and noted that the company had successfully met society’s needs and contributed to the continuous development of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.
Looking ahead, he stressed the importance of preparing comprehensively for future growth and positioning Lao Telecom as a leading telecommunications and comprehensive communications service provider in Laos.
Prof. Dr Boviengkham emphasised the need for continued development according to modern digital policies. Lao Telecom must focus on improving service quality and developing its workforce. Technical employees must enhance their knowledge and skills to become experts, meeting the rapidly evolving demands of technology.
He called on the party committee, board of directors, management and employees of Lao Telecom to raise their awareness, enhance their roles and responsibilities, and drive the company forward to meet the challenges of the 4.0 economic era, contribute to the nation’s development, and strengthen its connections with the region and the world.
The official ceremony to celebrate the founding of the company (November 11, 1996 – November 11, 2024) and to mark its growth and development over 28 years was held on Monday. The event was attended by the Minister of Technology and Communications, Prof. Dr Boviengkham Vongdara, deputy ministers, directors general of the Ministry of Technology and Communications, foreign shareholders, party committees, the board of directors, company employees, guests, and provincial branch representatives. The ceremony was attended by more than 2,000 people.
