Asean members Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia took part in the exercise.
The purpose of the exercise was to enhance counter-terrorism and anti-piracy capabilities in urban and maritime settings among participating countries for regional peace and stability.
The Aman Youyi exercise was initiated by China and Malaysia. Following an inaugural tabletop combat scenario exercise held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2014, Malaysia hosted field exercises in 2015 and 2016.
Deputy Director of the General Staff Department of the Lao People’s Army, Lieutenant General Phanseng Bounphanh, said “This exercise is an important vision and a new step for armies in the region to train together, especially through joint training with the armed forces of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.”
“The exercise is a good opportunity for commanders and soldiers in each country to share knowledge, lessons learnt, and experience in theory, principles and tactics in combat attacks in order to build their forces’ readiness to fight against groups of people and countries that do not have good prospects and always seek to destroy and cause unrest in the region, specifically, to preserve peace in the region and in the world.”
This exercise enabled officers and soldiers from the participating countries to meet with officers and soldiers from the People’s Liberation Army of China and build unity.
The exercise was viewed as a strong basis for strengthening the friendship between the armies of Asean countries and China.
