ASEAN members call for enhanced security cooperation
ASEAN countries have pledged to intensify cooperation in the maintenance of peace, security and resilience, during the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Vientiane on Thursday.
The meeting was chaired by Laos’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Chansamone Chanyalath.
Defence ministers from China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea and Thailand attended the meeting for the first time.
General Chansamone said “Today’s 11th ADMM-Plus is taking place under the theme “ASEAN: together for Peace, Security and Resilience”. The meeting is being convened amidst complex and unpredictable regional and global security situations, with a number of regions confronting traditional and non-traditional security challenges that are affecting people’s lives as well as socio-economic development.”
“Today is a good opportunity for Ministers of Defence to meet face to face and discuss regional and global security situations in order to further enhance cooperation in national defence and security, build mutual trust and understanding, and contribute to the maintenance and promotion of regional and international peace, security and resilience.”
“I am also pleased to note that the ADMM-Plus EWG work plans have been approved, which is an important step for further enhancing practical cooperation and the capacity building of member countries. I hope that all ADMM-Plus members will actively support and contribute to ensure the successful implementation of the EWG work plans.”
At the close of discussions, General Chansamone handed over the chairmanship of the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting to Malaysia, which will chair the activities of the regional grouping next year.
