Officials join Lao Airlines’ Board of Directors at a ceremony in Vientiane on Friday.

Lao Airlines marks 35 years of aviation excellence

The Lao national flag carrier, Lao Airlines State Enterprise, on Friday celebrated its 35th anniversary on its journey to aviation supremacy.
The celebration in Vientiane was attended by Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr Ngampasong Muongmany; Lao Airlines’ Board of Directors; employees and invited guests.

Managing Director of Lao Airlines State Enterprise, Mr Khamla Phommavanh speaks at the ceremony in Vientiane on Friday.

The event showcased the airline’s achievements over more than three decades and its vision for the future as it continues to connect Laos regionally and internationally.
Mr Ngampasong presided over the occasion and commended Lao Airlines for its consistent growth and contributions to national development.
“Lao Airlines has demonstrated remarkable progress since its inception in 1989,” he said. “From upgrading its fleet to enhancing internal operations and fostering a skilled workforce, the airline has transformed into a trusted and modern service provider.”
Since its establishment, Lao Airlines has evolved from modest beginnings into a leading regional carrier.
Formed in 1976 as the Civil Aviation Company through the merger of Royal Air Lao and Lao Air Lines, it was rebranded as Lao Airlines in 1989. The rebranding marked the beginning of a significant transformation, supported by investments in state-of-the-art aircraft and infrastructure.
Managing Director of Lao Airlines State Enterprise, Mr Khamla Phommavanh, detailed the airline’s current operations, which include a fleet of 11 aircraft, comprising four Airbus A320s and seven ATRs, serving 10 international destinations and seven domestic routes.
With 970 employees across 12 departments, Lao Airlines is an integral player in regional aviation.
“Lao Airlines remains committed to delivering high-quality air transport services, prioritising safety and professionalism,” Mr Khamla said. “We take pride in our achievements and look forward to expanding our network and improving the customer experience.”
Despite its achievements, Lao Airlines has faced significant challenges, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Rising fuel prices, inflation, and intensifying competition have tested the airline’s resilience.
Recognising these challenges, the Lao government has prioritised comprehensive reforms for the state enterprise, including restructuring its financial framework and seeking strategic partnerships to ensure sustainability.
The Minister stressed the importance of overcoming these hurdles. “Employees must adapt to changing circumstances, enhance their skills, and build trust with customers,” he said.
“The government will continue to support Lao Airlines through airport expansion, modernisation of equipment, and the establishment of a large aircraft maintenance facility to generate additional revenue.”
Looking ahead, Lao Airlines aims to strengthen regional and international connectivity.
Guided by its vision, “Connecting Laos Regionally, Internationally, Sustainably”, the airline has seven core goals: safety, service excellence, employee professionalism, financial sustainability, expanding its network, fostering partnerships, and enhancing its reputation.
The airline’s fleet modernisation began in the 1990s with the introduction of ATR aircraft and has advanced with the acquisition of Airbus A320s, offering passengers faster and more comfortable travel options.
As the sole national carrier, Lao Airlines reflects the country’s aspirations for growth and international integration.
“This success is a testament to the dedication of the Party, government and our employees,” Mr Khamla said. “It is a source of pride for our nation and an enduring symbol of collective effort over the years.”
With a solid foundation and clear strategic direction, Lao Airlines is set to reach new heights, contributing to Laos’ economic and social development while maintaining its commitment to excellence.
