KOFIH Laos supports nursing students at UHS
The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Vientiane has been enhancing capacity in hospital operation and management, through ongoing financial and technical assistance from the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) Laos.
As part of the “Programme to Enhance Capacity on Hospital Operation and Management of the University of Health Sciences Hospital and Competency of Human Resources for Health in Laos”, KOFIH is providing scholarship support to 90 undergraduate nursing students at the Faculty of Nursing Sciences from 2024 to 2029.

This initiative aims to cultivate highly skilled nursing professionals to staff the new UHS Hospital and align with the university’s Strategic Development Plan for 2021-2030. After completing their studies, 90 of these nursing graduates are expected to be recruited by the UHS Hospital.
On November 27, an orientation session was organised at the university’s Historical Building for the first cohort of 30 extra-nursing students for the academic year 2024-2025. Over 80 attendees, including Faculty members, students, and representatives of KOFIH and Inje University from the Republic of Korea, participated in the event, which was led by the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Dr Souksavanh Phanpaseuth.
The orientation covered a range of topics, including a warm welcome for new students, an overview of the Faculty’s history and structure, an explanation of the regulations, and a detailed discussion of the scholarship terms and conditions.
Dr Phanpaseuth emphasised the importance of dedication and hard work for students throughout their four-year programme, highlighting the potential for training, career advancement, and other opportunities available under the scholarship and after graduation.
Each cohort of 30 students will undergo a four-year bachelor degree programme. Following their studies, KOFIH will provide six months of in-country nursing professional training at a central hospital before their recruitment to the UHS Hospital.
Additionally, students with strong academic performance and English proficiency will receive support for higher professional training in the Republic of Korea. Those with good academic performance but limited English proficiency will be provided with training opportunities in neighbouring countries.
As a result of the orientation, 41 students expressed interest in the scholarship. The Faculty of Nursing Sciences will now proceed with the screening and contract process to select the first cohort. This initiative will significantly enhance the capacity of nursing resources and contribute to the successful operation of the new UHS Hospital.
