\Laos, Cambodia approve supplementary border markers

Senior officials in charge of Laos-Cambodia border demarcation have approved the design of border markers to be installed along their shared boundary line, as part of the conditions of a treaty between the two countries on border demarcation.

Senior officials from Laos and Cambodia meet in Cambodia for talks on border markers.

For clearer and more permanent demarcation of the border, 508 new markers will be installed along the border, in line with the shared goals of the two governments.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune led the Lao delegation attending a meeting with Cambodian counterparts in Cambodia on January 25-26 to discuss inspection of the main and supplementary border markers.
The two sides considered the suitability of the proposed new border markers before requesting that 508 be manufactured, with Cambodia to finance the production cost.
They approved the model that was presented for their inspection, which those present agreed was in keeping with the desired style.
The border markers will be installed at locations that have been agreed upon and earmarked by both sides.
The two delegations also exchanged views on joint border work to be carried out in the future and signed a memorandum of cooperation on this work.
The meeting was considered a milestone in the survey of the border area and agreement on the installation of border markers.
The new markers will ensure the Laos-Cambodia border is more clearly and sustainably marked, so that it is easily identifiable and therefore easier for officials to regulate.
Greater clarity will also ensure that people living in the area are well informed about the precise location of the border and are less likely to cross it unwittingly.
During their visit to Cambodia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune and his delegation also visited the Lao Consulate General of Laos in Stung Treng.
