Seoul Women’s College of Nursing on Tuesday hosted a workshop for lecturers from Laos’ Women with Disabilities Association (WWDA), the Promotion for Family Health Association (PFHA), and Mother and Newborn Hospital in Vientiane.
The workshop covered topics such as the current status and awareness of women with disabilities, prenatal and postnatal care, and family health.
The event was funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and led by Professor Lee Yunjung from Seoul Women’s College of Nursing.
Programme Manager at PFHA, Mr Phouymany Phongsavanh, expressed his optimism, saying “This workshop has greatly improved our understanding of women with disabilities and I believe it will enable us to conduct this year’s and next year’s lectures more effectively.”

She said “I am excited about the lectures scheduled for this year and next year, and I will work hard to encourage more women with disabilities to participate in the main training programme.”
Professor Lee Yunjung, the principal researcher of “The Training Course on Pregnancy and Childbirth Care Workers to Improve Maternal Health for Women with Disabilities”, funded by KOICA, emphasised her commitment, saying “We will continue our efforts to safeguard maternal health and improve the parenting environment for women with disabilities in Laos.”
Meanwhile, the Village Pregnancy and Childbirth Care Worker Training Course, “A Step Towards Empowering Women with Disabilities”, is set to take place from December 18-24.
This course is also funded by KOICA and supported through a multifaceted collaboration with Seoul Women`s College of Nursing and the Women with Disability Association.
This initiative aims to empower women with disabilities to play a vital role in improving maternal and child health in communities.
The week-long programme consists of 20 hours of training, designed to equip 10 women with disabilities with essential knowledge and practical skills.
The curriculum, divided into 10 chapters, addresses key areas such as: Understanding the unique needs of women with disabilities and raising societal awareness; Comprehensive guidance on pregnancy health, family planning, and childbirth management; and Emotional and physical care during postpartum periods and fostering family health.
The programme is made possible through the financial support of KOICA and the extensive collaboration of the SWCN and WWDA, whose contributions include coordination, resource development, and on-site support.
SWCN and WWDA have played pivotal roles in ensuring the successful implementation of this project.
Instructors will undergo a preparatory workshop to enhance their understanding of the training textbook and lecture materials, enabling them to deliver an impactful curriculum.
Upon completion, participants will be dispatched as care workers to provide much-needed maternal and childcare support to the households of women with disabilities.
This initiative underscores the importance of education, empowerment, and international cooperation in promoting health equity and creating inclusive opportunities for women with disabilities in Laos. It is a testament to what collaboration and shared goals can achieve in advancing sustainable development.
