Golden Triangle SEZ spends US$5 billion on development
Operators of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone in Tonpheung district, Bokeo province, have spent more than US$5 billion on infrastructure development and the construction of other facilities.

These developments are aimed at modernising the facilities in the zone, which serves as a tourist attraction and a business centre.
Deputy Head of the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone Management Board, Mr Khamsavaeng Vilayphong, met with reporters recently to outline the most recent developments.
The Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone was established in 2007 by the Kings Romans Group, referred to as Dok Ngiew Kham in Lao and Golden Kapok in Chinese, under an agreement by the Lao and Chinese governments.
The zone covers an area of 3,000 hectares under a 99-year lease agreement.
To date, about US$5 billion has been invested in the development of the zone, of which about US$3 billion has been provided by Dok Ngiew Kham.
The Lao government has financed the construction of a 46.6-km road between Namking and Mom villages and an embankment along the Mekong River to prevent erosion, at a cost of US$65 million.
Since 2007, investors and small business operators have set up 2,459 business units in the zone with registered capital of more than US$1.4 billion, including 331 companies and 2,128 micro-enterprises.
Mr Khamsavaeng said the zone’s management board has financed the construction of boat docks, international checkpoints, an international airport, schools, hospitals, parks, and waste water treatment plants, and initiated wide-ranging modern agriculture schemes.
A total of 22 hotels have been built, as well as an 18-hole golf course, shopping centres, other tourist attractions, and night markets.
Since 2009, 605 billion kip in revenue has been amassed. In 2023, revenue amounted to 80.3 billion kip. Visa fees collected at the Golden Triangle International Border Crossing amounted to US$1.4 million with tax revenue recorded at 30.15 billion kip.
In the first eight months of this year, total revenue earned in the zone amounted to 128 billion kip while fees collected at the Golden Triangle international checkpoint in the first six months were recorded at 1.31 million and 21.82 billion kip.
