Saravan breaks ground for new hydropower plant
A new hydropower plant is being built on the Xeset-Chan rapids in Vapi district, Saravan province, with a groundbreaking ceremony for the project taking place recently in Phounsavanh village.
Construction will begin following the acceptance of a feasibility study on the Xeset-Chan Rapids Hydropower Project, which will have an installed capacity of 13 megawatts.
Those attending the ceremony included the Governor of Saravan province, Dr Daovong Phonekeo, representatives of the two Lao developers, and other officials associated with the project.
Contracts relating to project development, project management, electricity purchase and sale, and other aspects of the project have also been signed.
The developers expect that some components of the plant will be in place by the end of this year and during 2025, such as the overflow dam, a channel that conveys water to the reservoir, and a field office.
When the hydropower plant is operational, Saravan province will benefit in direct and indirect ways, such as through job creation.
Saravan is located in the south of Laos and covers an area of 16,389 square kilometres. It borders Savannakhet province to the north, Vietnam to the east, Xekong province to the southeast, Champassak province to the south, and Thailand to the west.
