The GS1 prefix of Laos.

Laos adopts GS1 global standards as Lao Brewery Company receives first national barcode

Laos has taken a decisive step toward strengthening its global trade competitiveness with the official adoption of the GS1 international standards, aligning the country with more than 120 economies worldwide that use the globally recognised product identification system.
The milestone was achieved in Vientiane  on February 26, when Lao Brewery Company (LBC) became the first company in the country to receive and use an official Lao barcode under the newly implemented GS1 framework.
The adoption of GS1 standards signals a significant advancement in Laos’ commercial infrastructure, enabling greater product traceability, digital transparency, and supply chain efficiency, critical foundations for Lao products to compete and travel confidently across regional and global markets.
More importantly, it reflects a broader shift in how modern Laos defines pride – not only through heritage, but through standards, systems and global readiness.

As one of the country’s largest manufacturers and exporters, LBC’s early registration under the Lao GS1 system demonstrates the operational discipline and international best practices required to meet global market expectations.
By becoming the first registered company in Laos to receive a Lao barcode prefix, LBC reinforces its role not only as an industry leader, but as a partner in the country’s economic modernisation and export readiness.
The Managing Director of LBC, Mr Henrik Juel Andersen, said: “The adoption of GS1 standards in Laos marks an important step in strengthening supply chain transparency and export readiness.
“As the first company registered under the Lao barcode system, LBC is proud to help set the benchmark for operational excellence, traceability and global standards. This milestone reflects our long-standing commitment to building systems and capabilities that support both our growth and the broader development of Lao commerce.”
The introduction of GS1 standards is more than a technical milestone, it represents a shift toward a more connected, accountable and internationally competitive Lao economy.
For decades, LBC has contributed to the country’s development through local sourcing, sustainable agriculture initiatives, job creation, export growth, education, healthcare, sports development, and the preservation of Lao culture and heritage.
That contribution extends further today, helping establish the foundational systems that allow Lao products to be identified, tracked and trusted worldwide.
By leading the adoption of global standards, LBC sets a powerful precedent for Lao producers across industries, demonstrating that products made in Laos can meet the highest levels of international traceability, transparency and quality assurance.

As Laos continues to integrate into an increasingly digital and interconnected global marketplace, systems such as GS1 will play a critical role in strengthening consumer trust, supply chain visibility, and export credibility.
Through this milestone, Laos signals its readiness to operate within the same standards that power global commerce – ensuring that Lao products are recognised, trusted and competitive anywhere in the world.
As one of the first companies to take this step forward, LBC reflects the Pride of Laos, where pride is measured not by words, but by standards the world can trust.
