Sushi Shinjuku brings taste of Tokyo to the heart of Vientiane

Stepping into Sushi Shinjuku on P3 Road in Phontong-Savat village, Chanthabouly district, Vientiane, diners are instantly transported far beyond the borders of Laos.
The subtle aroma of fresh seafood, the elegance of carefully plated dishes, and the warm, traditional Japanese greeting create an atmosphere that feels unmistakably like Tokyo.
For many, it is more than just a meal—it is an experience.
A dream shaped over decades
Behind this authentic dining destination is a story of passion, patience, and perseverance. The restaurant’s owner, Miss Aay Thummavongsa, first visited Japan 25 years ago—an experience that would shape her future.
At the time, the idea of eating raw fish was unfamiliar to her. Yet what left a lasting impression was not just the cuisine, but the vitality and longevity of the Japanese people.
“I saw how healthy and strong they were, and it inspired me,” she said.
Although her career initially took her into other fields, her love for cooking never faded. Six years ago, she turned a long-held dream into reality by opening Sushi Shinjuku, with a clear vision: to bring the same level of quality and authenticity found in Japan to diners in Laos.

Authenticity at its core
What distinguishes Sushi Shinjuku is its unwavering dedication to authenticity. The restaurant sources Grade A premium ingredients directly from Japan, ensuring that every dish meets the highest standards.
This commitment extends beyond seafood. From rice and seasonings to sauces and even tableware, every detail is carefully selected to recreate a genuine Japanese dining experience.
The effort has earned strong praise from customers. While the majority of diners are Lao families, the restaurant has also become a favourite among Japanese expatriates and other foreign nationals.
“Some Japanese customers tell me it feels just like eating at home,” Miss Aay says. “That means a lot to us.”
Rising above challenges
Operating a high-end Japanese restaurant in Laos comes with its share of challenges. Fluctuations in the value of the kip have affected import costs, requiring careful adjustments to pricing.
Yet, despite these pressures, Miss Aay remains firm in her commitment to quality.
“We never compromise on our ingredients,” she says.
Equally important to the restaurant’s success is its team. With more than 20 staff members—many of whom have been there since the beginning—the business has built a strong sense of loyalty and consistency that customers recognise and appreciate.
More than just sushi
Sushi Shinjuku has continued to evolve. Its second floor now offers Japanese-style shabu and yakiniku, expanding the dining experience and allowing the restaurant to accommodate more than 100 guests.
Diners are also treated to thoughtful touches, including complimentary ice cream and grilled Japanese fish heads—small gestures that enhance the overall experience.
Beyond the restaurant itself, the business has expanded into home delivery and catering services, catering for events of all sizes. Its reputation has grown steadily, earning recognition in Japanese travel publications and praise from authorities for its hygiene and safety standards.
Inspired by Tokyo’s vibrant spirit
The name “Shinjuku” was carefully chosen, inspired by one of Tokyo’s most famous districts. Known for its lively streets filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment, Shinjuku represents the energy and diversity of Japanese urban life.
By bringing that name to Vientiane, the restaurant seeks to capture the same spirit—offering not just food, but a cultural experience.
Looking ahead
As Sushi Shinjuku continues to thrive, Miss Aay is already planning for the future, with ambitions to open a second restaurant in Vientiane.
For her, the restaurant is more than a business venture. It is a contribution to the community—introducing healthy, high-quality cuisine while enriching the local dining scene.
Whether for seasoned sushi lovers or families seeking something new, Sushi Shinjuku offers an experience that is both authentic and memorable—a true taste of Japan in the heart of Vientiane.
