JICA backs scheme to strengthen food value chains

A new developmernt in Laos-Japan cooperation was reached on March 24 with the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation to advance a multi-sectoral food value chain development.
The initiative aims to strengthen agricultural production and market systems across Laos.
The agreement, signed between the Department of Agricultural Extension and Cooperatives and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), signals a renewed commitment to enhancing Laos’ capacity to meet growing domestic and international food market demands.
The project builds on the Food Value Chain Strengthening initiative in Laos, with thee main aim of formulating a comprehensive master plan to improve the efficiency, quality, and competitiveness of the country’s food value chains.
This would support the use of production methods that meet modern market standards, while also promoting export readiness and reducing reliance on imports.
Speaking at the agreement signing ceremony, representatives from Laos and Japan highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts among government agencies, producers, and private sector stakeholders.
The project is expected to improve linkages across the supply chain, from production to market distribution, particularly for vegetables and fruit.
The four-year initiative, running from May 2026 to May 2030, will focus on Vientiane and key production areas with strong supply potential.
With a total budget of approximately 324 million yen (US$2.2 million), the project will support a range of activities aimed at strengthening agricultural systems and ensuring food security.
The agreement was signed by the Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension and Cooperatives, Dr Anongsone Phommachan, and Chief Representative of JICA in Laos, Ms Kobayashi Miyako, with Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Mr Kikeo Singnavong acting as a witness.
