Participants gather for a farewell dinner at the close of the World Journalists Conference in the Republic of Korea on April 2.

World Journalists Conference concludes in Republic of Korea

The World Journalists Conference 2026 concluded on April 2 in Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, after bringing together journalists from about 30 countries to discuss pressing challenges in the global media while learning about the Republic of Korea’s culture and technological advancements.
A reporter from the Vientiane Times was among the participants.
The conference, which began on March 30 at the Korea Press Centre in Seoul, explored the themes “Democracy and Journalism at a Crossroads: The Role of the Media in Times of Crisis” and “AI in the Newsroom: From Practice to the Next Phase”.
Participants also visited places of interest across the country.
A farewell dinner was organised on April 2 at the Wave M West Hotel, next to Sihwa Lake, often referred to as Siheung City’s “miracle lake”. The event was attended by the city’s Mayor, Mr Lim Byeong-taek and JAK President Mr Park Jong-hyun, and was emceed by JAK Vice President Mr Hwang Seong-gyu from Gyeongin Ilbo.
Mr Park said “A few days ago I referred to you as colleagues, but today I call you my friends. Over the past few days, through the conference, discussions, and shared activities, we have built connections and learned how we can improve.”
“Journalism matters more than ever. We should continue to reflect on its role. We do not simply report on the world; we help people understand it, and sometimes we help change it. About a year and a half ago, we, as Korean journalists, contributed to transforming the system from a coup to a democratic one. I hope you understand our intentions, and that we can meet again—perhaps next year or even sooner.”
A participant from Thailand, Mr Supawit Jianrunsaeng, said “It’s time to say farewell. I came to Seoul with an empty bag, but I leave with a bag full of knowledge, new ideas from the conference, and good memories. I walked into this country alone, but now alongside me are friends from around the world.”
“Thank you, my friends, for being amazing companions on our journey in this colourful country—the Republic of Korea.”
A journalist from Vietnam, Mr Le Xuan Trung, said “I’m very happy after my week-long trip to South Korea. I learned so much from this experience, as well as from my dynamic colleagues from different countries.”
