A journey of pride and discovery at the World Journalists Conference

My participation in the World Journalists Conference was not only a personal first and a professional milestone, but also a journey filled with pride, discovery and connection.
Representing Laos at such a prestigious international gathering was an honour I will always cherish. I am sincerely grateful to the Journalists Association of Korea and the government of the Republic of Korea for granting me this remarkable opportunity to experience their country firsthand.

The World Journalists Conference, held from March 30 to April 3, brought together 41 journalists from 30 countries, including myself from the Vientiane Times newspaper. From the moment I landed in Korea, I felt a sense of excitement and admiration. The country immediately impressed me with its modern infrastructure, vibrant culture and warm hospitality.
One of the first memorable stops in Seoul was the famous Kyobo Book Centre in the Gwanghwamunarea. As the largest bookstore in Korea, it was more than just a place for books—it was a cultural landmark. Known also as a filming location for the popular 2007 drama Coffee Prince, the atmosphere was both inspiring and nostalgic. Sharing this experience with other journalists from around the world made it even more special.
On March 31, we travelled to the historic Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) in Paju, located in Gyeonggi Province. Visiting the OdusanUnification Tower, Camp Greaves and the Joint Security Area Museum offered a profound insight into the Korean Peninsula’s divided history. It was a sobering yet educational experience that highlighted the importance of peace and dialogue.

Our journey then continued to Incheon, where we explored the National Museum of World Writing Systems. This unique museum celebrates the diversity of written communication across cultures. We also enjoyed a scenic water taxi ride and visited the impressive G-Tower, where we learned how artificial intelligence is being applied to modern traffic management systems.
On April 1, we visited the Yongin DaejanggeumPark, the largest open film set in Korea operated by MBC. Walking through the historical sets gave us a glimpse into Korea’s rich storytelling tradition. Later, in Suwon, we explored the Samsung Innovation Museum, which showcases the evolution of technology, and the vibrant StarfieldSuwon, home to the stunning Starfield Library and a filming site for the drama Lovely Runner.
The following day, we visited the Gyeonggi-do Assembly, gaining insight into local governance and public administration. This was an invaluable opportunity to understand how regional policies are shaped and implemented in Korea.
Our exploration continued in Siheung, a city rapidly emerging as a hub for the bio industry and tourism. At the Siheung Gaetgol Ecological Park, we experienced the beauty of Korea’s natural landscapes, while the Marina Landscape Bridge offered breathtaking coastal views. We also visited Sihwa Lake and Geobukseom Island, also known as Turtle Island, which is becoming a centre for marine leisure and tourism.
Throughout the programme, I had the pleasure of meeting inspiring journalists from across the globe. These exchanges of ideas, cultures and perspectives were among the most rewarding aspects of my journey.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Journalists Association of Korea, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korea Press Foundation for organising such an enriching programme.
My visit left a lasting impression on me and I returned home not only with wonderful memories, but also with new friendships and a deeper understanding of Korea. I truly hope to meet my fellow participants again in the future. Thank you very much, and until we meet again.
