Agricultural officials join farmers and LBC’s representatives to monitor the cultivation at LBC’s organic rice pilot project.

Farmers benefit as Lao Brewery's rice project yields 1,500 tonnes

More than 400 farming families in Vientiane are benefiting from improved livelihoods and reduced production costs following the successful harvesting of more than 1,500 tonnes of dry season rice under a sustainable cultivation initiative.
The Sustainable Rice Project, spearheaded by the Lao Brewery Co Ltd (LBC), has demonstrated significant benefits for local communities by introducing the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) technique. This innovative method boosts crop quality and provides a stable market for local growers.

The project, which operates in collaboration with the Rice and Commercial Crops Research Centre under the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute (NAFRI), focuses on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and organic standards.
The Deputy Head of Pakngum district’s Agriculture and Forestry Office, Mr Khamsen Somphandee, noted that the AWD technique is a vital pathway for sustainable development in Laos. He highlighted its ability to save water, reduce environmental impacts, and ultimately help farmers achieve better yields.
“The cooperation between Lao Brewery and the farming community is an essential mechanism for knowledge transfer and developing production standards,” Mr Khamsen said.
The CA, CSR and Sustainability Director of the LBC, Mr Sithixay Kettavong, reported that the project has grown substantially over the past six years. From an initial 16 hectares and 14 families, it has expanded to cover more than 600 hectares across Hadxaifong, Xaythany, and Pakngum districts.
"The AWD technique is the heart of this project as it saves 30 percent more water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50 percent," Mr Sithixay explained.
Participating farmers expressed satisfaction with the results, noting that the technique has significantly lowered their water usage and production costs. Beyond technical improvements, the project ensures a guaranteed buyer for their harvest, leading to increased household income and long-term job security.Currently, the initiative includes 15 hectares of dedicated organic rice production. LBC aims to further expand these regenerative agricultural practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Lao agricultural sector, while securing high-quality local raw materials.
